Rice price today August 4, 2021: Stopped falling after government proposal to buy reserves

Rice prices in the Mekong Delta provinces stopped falling today after the government proposed to buy reserves when the price of summer-autumn rice decreased sharply. The summer-autumn rice crop is currently being harvested in full swing, with high output, making harvesting and trading difficult. Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development proposed that the government implement a national rice purchase and reserve program to reduce market pressure and help stabilize the rice market. According to the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the Mekong Delta provinces have only harvested 600,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice, with about 900,000 hectares to be harvested in August and September, which is also the time with the highest commercial rice output. However, the summer-autumn rice harvest in the Mekong Delta is facing many difficulties, with no buyers for ripe rice, and traders forfeiting their deposits. Therefore, if this issue is not thoroughly resolved, it will affect the rice industry and its growth. According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long An province, to date, farmers have harvested more than 53,200 hectares of Summer-Autumn rice, concentrated in localities in the Dong Thap Muoi region. The estimated rice yield is 5.2 tons/ha, the output is 277,660 tons, the rice price ranges from 5,300 – 5,800 VND/kg. Compared to the Summer-Autumn crop in 2020, the rice price has decreased by 300-500 VND/kg. With the current rice price, farmers have little profit, or even no profit on the harvested area.
